TECNO Enhances Universal Tone Technology with Advanced Skin Tone Precision

TECNO, a forward-thinking brand driven by AI innovation, is taking mobile imaging technology to new heights with the latest improvements to its Universal Tone system. The company has refined its approach to skin tone representation, introducing a significantly enhanced multi-skin tone colour card that now features 372 shades. This upgrade, along with refinements to its skin tone restoration technology, ensures a more accurate and diverse portrayal of skin tones across various ethnicities and lighting conditions.

These advancements will debut in the TECNO CAMON 40 Series, set to be unveiled at MWC Barcelona 2025 this March. Attendees will have the opportunity to experience these cutting-edge enhancements firsthand at TECNO’s booth, located at Hall 6 Stand 6B11, Fira Gran Via.

Expanding the Skin Tone Spectrum for Greater Inclusivity

TECNO has made significant strides in improving its Universal Tone technology by expanding its multi-skin tone colour card to 372 shades. This expansion aims to provide a more inclusive and representative database, accurately reflecting diverse skin tones from regions including Southeast Asia, South Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. The updated colour card enhances both scientific accuracy and practical application, serving as a vital calibration tool for TECNO’s advanced imaging algorithms.

As part of this innovation, TECNO will present two specialized versions of the upgraded colour card at MWC 2025—one designed to enhance representation of darker skin tones, while the other focuses on lighter tones. This ensures comprehensive coverage and improved accuracy in capturing a wide range of complexions.

Furthering its commitment to regional customization, TECNO has collaborated with the University of Leeds (UK) and Dar Al-Hekma University (Saudi Arabia) to develop a dedicated skin tone card specifically for Saudi Arabia. This new addition, featuring 186 locally representative skin tone patches, marks a significant milestone in TECNO’s efforts to refine skin tone accuracy for different markets. The initiative underscores the brand’s dedication to tailoring its imaging technology to specific cultural and environmental conditions, improving overall authenticity in portrait photography.

Refining the Multi-Skin Tone Color Restoration System

A key component of TECNO’s Universal Tone technology is the Multi-Skin Tone Color Restoration Engine, which has been significantly upgraded to deliver superior accuracy. This system now incorporates an advanced CCM Skin Tone Calibration Algorithm alongside a Spectrum-Based Automatic White Balance (AWB) Algorithm.

The CCM algorithm, trained using TECNO’s expanded skin tone colour card, ensures that captured images maintain precise colour fidelity. Meanwhile, the AWB algorithm addresses common issues such as colour shifting in monochromatic photo settings and enhances white balance across different skin tones within a single frame. Together, these improvements result in a remarkable 50% increase in overall skin tone accuracy, producing natural and true-to-life portraits.

Additionally, TECNO has introduced an Intelligent Skin-Tone Grading Exposure Algorithm, which optimizes exposure adjustments across varied skin tones. This feature fine-tunes brightness levels and enhances contrast, ensuring well-balanced and natural-looking portraits even in challenging lighting environments, such as high-contrast or backlit settings.

TECNO’s Commitment to Inclusive and Bias-Free Imaging

TECNO remains committed to reducing bias in skin tone representation and fostering inclusivity in mobile imaging. By continuously refining its Universal Tone technology, the company is setting new industry standards for accuracy and representation. With one of the most advanced skin tone aesthetics models in mobile photography, TECNO’s dedication to technological innovation continues to shape the future of imaging.

As the industry moves forward, TECNO’s relentless pursuit of excellence ensures that its devices provide an inclusive, high-quality photography experience for users worldwide. The latest updates to Universal Tone reinforce the brand’s position as a leader in AI-powered imaging technology, redefining how skin tones are captured and represented in mobile photography.
